“We clandestinely cross the border into Burma where soldiers – who can shoot us on sight –may be spying on us. We’re going to meet with persecuted populations trying to flee a secret genocide against the country’s ethnic minorities perpetrated with impunity by the Burmese military dictatorship.”
In Birmanie l’indomptable, la résistance d’un peuple, Pierre Mignault and Hélène Magny secretly enter one of Burma’s most dangerous – and almost inaccessible – regions, the heart of the Karen State, where civil war has been raging for 60 years. Escorted by Karen rebels they meet with locals hiding in the jungle trying to escape rape and murder, but also to resist forced relocation and slavery imposed by the military regime.
A severe humanitarian crisis has been taking place in Burma for over 20 years. The Burmese military government – with an army of 400,000-strong even though the country has no outside enemies – has been at war with its own people for decades. This film shows us just how far the Burmese people are willing to go to win back their freedom and establish democracy. Throughout the movie we visit with the Karen people in Burma and in the underground networks of the Burmese resistance in exile in Thailand, where political activists fight against one of the world’s bloodiest military dictatorships.
