The show centers on a dedicated team of medical professionals working and living together in exceptional circumstances. The cast of characters are, by nature of their roles and talents, a varied mix of personalities, bonded by a common cause –to save lives. This select few has been brought together to deal with the ultimate in stressful situations, treating the most vulnerable people in the world -- fallen soldiers, enemy combatants and those civilians caught in-between.
Our team experience personal crises, failures and triumphs as they struggle to save lives smack dab in the middle of the Afghan war. We follow these heroic – though very human – doctors and nurses as they go about their lives and work. Like flies on the wall, we watch them try to balance their emotional lives (in Afghanistan as well as back home) while saving the lives of victims of war injuries and/or diseases they may never have encountered. Some double down in intensity, others develop a gallows sense of humor, and still others take to drink or drugs or sex in order to handle the pressure. Whether they vent through booze, floor hockey, or sexual escapades, nothing binds men and women together so much as suffering under the heat of battle, and, conversely, nothing gives birth to such a sense of purpose, well-being and camaraderie as a desperate effort to save the life of a single human being.
As a result, our medical team becomes very close – seeking comfort, discovering friendship and, at times, falling in love with one another. Together, they discover that neither medicine nor human interaction can be defined simply in black and white. Like with love, war often burns its participants. The episodes draw on all aspects of the Afghan conflict for story material – everything from major battle injuries to treating locals for cataracts of the eye. Medical stories include high octane, life-and-death tales with intensity and high stakes, heartwarming stories of connection, or cat and mouse medical mysteries. The interaction of our main ensemble with those they treat gives the stories their engine, and these stories drive the personal narrative of the regulars forward as well. The intersection of the personal and the professional is constant.
